Serving Up Directories with Apache

There are a number of web-based applications to allow file viewing and directory traversing over normal web pages. None of which are as clean and simple to employ, let alone as secure as letting Apache itself do all the work. With a simple flick of a .htaccess parameter, ‘+Indexes’, an unsuspecting directory becomes accessible albeit an eye sore.

There is a great way to make better listing using apache with mod_autoindex and CSS. The best piece of code I’ve found is called Indices. It takes Apache’s default listing and displays them in their minimalist, clean beauty.

More details about mod_autoindex can be found from Apache’s documentation.
