Two Doors

I noticed there are two doors for the bathroom in the downtown Amazon office building. The reason is immediately obvious and it speaks volumes about Amazon. The purpose is to make for an easy user experience when entering and exiting the bathroom. This Amazon bathroom has large, broad push and pull handles in order to make entry easier for both individuals going out as well as coming in. It was readily obvious when I walked in and an individual was exiting at the same time that we had both chosen the doors that was easiest (the one to push).

After making this observation, at Amazon orientation they shared a video of Jeff Bezos who was showing a series of examples of good customer design. The concept was to reduce cognitive load or in other words, make it easy to use products. One of his examples was a door with small pulls. The system was so awkward that there was a sign to explain how to properly open the door. It is one thing to notice a design and appreciate it during its use. It’s another thing to think about new solutions to common problems and then enact those ideas. Who knows–it may even open a few doors for you!
