Apple iSlate

The net is buzzing with the possible advent of an Apple slate slated to be announced at the end of January. Apple has never satisfied my netbook drive after producing their ultra thin mac book air. It would make perfect sense to fill the void in their product line with a 10″ slate product. The device is slated to be a reader and educational tool as well as a companion input device for other computers. I can only imagine how ideal this could be as a remote for my Mac Mini HDTV setup. I’ve been using my iPhone like an eReader and with the amount of digital books I have on hand, I would definitely go for a larger Apple device. The question is whether or not there really is a market for this type of device. There are certainly markets for netbooks and eReaders and perhaps combining those two market sectors may motivate such a device for Apple.

Using 10″ OLED touchscreen will no doubt push the price beyond the iPhone (which is currently about $600 USD). As a purely educational product, I would doubt the market’s ability. Content providers and publishers are so technologically backwards and scattered, I would wonder how these areas could successfully provide their support. After all, it was the pirated music market that gave iPods their wings. I’m not seeing the same support within publishing. Amazon’s kindle and its library of best-sellers has been the most meaningful attempt to bring the printed word into the 21st century and provide a means to regulate (and monetize) distribution. It will be interesting to see Apple’s solution to the netbook/eReader space. I hope they will succeed.
